Tocumen Airport will have new terminal

Expansion. Due to the growth it represents in the national economy, investment will continue.

After construction on the North Pier finishes, work will begin for the new Central and South Terminal, with the aim of improving the lack of boarding space in the current passenger terminal.

The new project foresees commercial, hotel and tourist infrastructure, with an investment of approximately $350 million, to be completed by 2014, according to the Tocumen, S.A. administration.

The new South Terminal covers approximately 50,000 square meters of construction space and will include new areas for immigration and customs, passenger boarding check-point, parking lots, commercial areas and 30 boarding ramps, which will allow the flow of up to 15 million passengers a year, detailed Juan Carlos Pino, manager of Tocumen S.A.

After technical and aviation specifications are completed, an international tender will be opened by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the governing body on this issue at an international level, to facilitate the selection of the best bidder for the tender.

With this project, estimated to begin soon, the central building will measure 8 million square feet, more than double the current structure.

A new access to the airport terminal, through the Southern Corridor, will also be built, which will provide for a light rail to reduce traffic flow.
