Carnival is inspired by Balboa's sailing

Vasco Núñez de Balboa's discovery of the South Sea will be the theme for various activities in our country in 2013, one of them being the capital city's Carnival. Balboa discovered the South Sea on September 29, 1513, and it now marks the 500th anniversary.

Therefore, the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) will celebrate Carnival of the City inspired by the historic event. Approximately 800,000 people will participate during the five days of spectacles, from February 8 to 12, which will feature 21,500 tourists, 23 international journalists, 129 national artists, 48 congo dancing groups and 10 trucks with tanks full of water to spray on the crowds. The four days of parades will have 50 floats, including the biggest float in Carnival history, measuring 100 feet high.

The Carnival will be held on the Coastal Strip, once again with the support of the security forces of the Red Cross, National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), the National Police and the City Hall of Panama. An ambassador of tourism in Panama has also been chosen for this event, Virginia Hernández, who will also represent the country at the Miss World 2013 pageant.
