Remembering Pope John Paul II

Yesterday dozens of parishioners remembered the visit by Pope John Paul II to Panama 30 years ago, as they gathered in the chapel named after him in a Mass led by the Archbishop of Panama, José Domingo Ulloa.

In the Eucharist, which began at approximately 9:00 a.m., Ulloa recalled that day of March 5, 1983, when John Paul II set foot on the isthmus, as one of the hottest days for the pontiff; nevertheless, as he departed the country his face appeared calm. “Panama was an oasis for the Pope,” expressed Ulloa.

The faithful admired the statue of John Paul II.

Elena Ortega, a parishioner, said that it is very important for Catholics to remember this date, which remains cherished in their hearts.

Starting at 9:00 a.m. next Tuesday, March 5, the Holy Shroud will be on exhibition in the John Paul II chapel.

According to Archbishop Ulloa, this exhibition will reveal the real passion that Jesus endured for humans.

For one year, Panamanians will be able to visit the exhibition of the Holy Shroud to see the instruments of torture and crucifixion used on the walk to Mount Calvary, including the nails, whip, spear and crown of thorns, along with two coins from the reign of Pontius Pilate and a replica of this sacred garment, as the original is stored in Turin.
