338 of the Casco Antiguo

This January, Panama´s Casco Antiguo will celebrate its 338th anniversary.  The Casco Antiguo, also known as Old Panama, will hold a celebration from the 17th to the 21st of January of 2011. According to Maria Cristina Knoll, director of culture and emblematic activities of the Office of Casco Antiguo (OCA), the date of the celebration is the same date as that when the old settlers of the city decided to leave what today the Old Town and start what is now known as Panama City. This, in order to construct a secure city bordered by a protective wall, easier to defend from the privateers and pirates. Throughout the celebrations, conferences will be held on the history of the transfer in the Museum of the Canal and in the House of the Culture. Also, a history contest will be held for students of elementary schools from the city. After the celebrations, all materials used will be securely placed in an urn which will be kept and opened in the same celebrations twenty years from now.
