The foamy waters which surround the Isthmus of Panama are recognized, as have been for many decades, for its abundance of fish. These are appropriate for sport fishing, using the catch and release modality to preserve the sport and the environment. There are dozens of places frequented by sea and fishing lovers, among the rich and famous, and in its waters various fishing records have been established, of merlin and sail fish. Outstanding for its abundant biodiversity the waters of the Gulf of Panama, the Las Perlas Archipielago, Gulf of Montijo and surrounding the Coiba island, as well as in the Gulf of Chiriquí and Piñas Bay, in Darien. There is also fishing in sweet waters in some lakes close to the capital city.
