Historical Facts

The geologic history of Panama is relatively recent. Approximately three million years ago, one narrow earth strip emerged from the sea as a result of tectonic movements and volcanic activity. This new isthmus separated waters of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, united the continental masses of North America and the South, created the Caribbean Sea and the current of the Gulf, transformed the world-wide climate before warming up the previously frozen coasts of Europe and gave rise to the African savannah. It also gave beginning to a massive interchange of the flora and fauna between north and the south, acting like life bridge that included the passage of the humans who populated all the continent.

Manuel Amador Guerrero, who is known as one of the champions of the Panamanian nationality, was not even born on the isthmus, but in Turbaco, near Cartagena, on July 30, 1833. He came from a contradictory family. His maternal grandfather, Manuel Guerrero, during the siege on Cartagena by Paul Morilllo in 1815, led an insurrection of Spanish prisoners who blocked the gates of the Santo Domingo wall to the patriots.

After the Panamanian flag was adopted, the Interim Governing Board announced a competition for national artists to present designs for the new nation's coat of arms. Among hundreds of models, the coat of arms designed by Nicolás Villalaz and painted by his brother Sebastián Villalaz was chosen. It was approved in 1904 and has been used officially ever since.

The National Anthem of Panama was adopted as a national symbol by Law No. 34 on December 15, 1949, along with the flag and the national coat of arms. Despite being a national symbol, it was not officially celebrated until Law No. 71 on November 11, 1955 established November 1 as the day of the National Anthem.

It is said that the first song that was played as the National Anthem of Panama was practically an improvisation. It all happened in 1903, during a visit by William I. Buchanan, first ambassador and minister plenipotentiary of the United States to Panama.
