Commemoration of Martyrs' Day on January 9

On January 9, the University of Panama (UP) held a ceremony to commemorate the 49th anniversary of Martyrs' Day in 1964, when 21 citizens lost their lives for trying to place the Panamanian flag in Zonian territory of the Canal.

Eldis Barnes, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs of the UP, gave a press conference to explain that the aim of the event is for younger generations to be aware of this historical fact.

Miguel Candanedo, general secretary of this educational institution, noted that the activity will feature a speaker who was present in that historical moment.

This is the second time that the UP has organized this act at the January 9 Plaza.
