Local surfers hope to be discovered at Venao Beach

The wait is over. The first national tour of Discovering Surfing Talents 2013, Copa Súper Deportes, is coming this weekend to Venao Beach in Pedasí. Denisse González, public relations and project coordinator for Discovering Surfing, noted yesterday that this is the first of eight events scheduled, starting now in the summer season and extending into  winter.

Approximately 80 children and youth surfers aged 5 to 18 years old are registered in this circuit, held for the second consecutive year.

“We encourage the sport, teach them to surf on an international level, clean up the beaches and have a competition,” explained González. This initiative arose after the last World Junior Surfing championship, held last year in Panama, where few local surfers bore the nation's tricolors.

The main aim of this circuit is to use recreational activities to identify a new generation of athletes to represent the country in international tournaments. “We are truly lacking and need new competitors to surface. Since we began it last year, this circuit has been a success,” González concluded.
